Arsenal need to return to winning ways at the Emirates Stadium against an Aston Villa side who themselves are in good form.

Some critics have argued the rails are coming off Arsenal’s title campaign, following a 2-2 draw against 10-man Birmingham City last weekend and a crushing 4-0 FA Cup defeat by Manchester United the weekend before. It is not just the results which are causing concern, but the body language shown by apparent leaders at the club. Following an horrific injury to striker Eduardo last weekend, a folorn William Gallas sat alone on the pitch, apparently crying, when he should have shown strength and set an example to the other members of the team.

Despite not winning in their last three matches in all competitions, Arsene Wenger’s side have a formidable record at the Emirates Stadium this season, winning 12 and drawing two out of 14 played. Opponents Aston Villa are in solid form themselves and join Liverpool and Everton on 47 points as several teams chase the coveted fourth Premiership spot. Martin O’Neill’s side have lost just twice away from home this season, winning five and drawing six of 13 played. After losing at Fulham, Villa went on to beat Newcastle 4-1 and recorded a 2-1 victory at Reading last Sunday.

Aston Villa have not won at Arsenal in 13 attempts, since they beat them 2-1 at Highbury in the 1993/94 season, when Guy Whittingham and Andy Townsend cancelled out an opener by Ian Wright. Since then, the Gunners have won nine and drawn four against Villa with last season’s meeting finishing 1-1 on 19 August. Olof Mellberg put Villa ahead before Gilberto Silva equalised with six minutes left. Prior to that result, Arsenal had won their last eight in a row at home against the Villains.

Whether Arsenal are cracking under the pressure of life at the top of the Premiership remains to be seen but their character will be tested against another Midlands side when Aston Villa visit the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners are still unbeaten at home this season, winning 12 and drawing two Premiership matches but Martin O’Neill’s side have proved to be good travellers this season. Arsenal may look a little lightweight in attack without the injured Eduardo and Van Persie and Villa are good enough to get a draw in North London.
