An all Premiership fixture occurs in the quarter finals of the Champions League when Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

This is the first of three matches Arsenal and Liverpool will play against eachother over the next six days. In between the two legged Champions League quarter final, the pair will also meet at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday in the Premiership.

The duo played eachother four times last season - twice in the league and also in the FA Cup and Carling Cup. Arsenal won three of the four meetings, with Liverpool winning emphatically at Anfield in the Premiership for their ownly victory against the Gunners last season. Arsenal won at Anfield twice in three days to knock the Reds out of both the FA Cup and Carling Cup, where they won a remarkable match 6-3.

Going into the match, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has the better of the head-to-head meetings. The Gunners have won five while Liverpool have emerged victorious on three occasions and one match, this season’s league encounter at Anfield, ended all square.

While the duo have not played eachother in Europe, both have played against English opposition in the Champions League in recent seasons. The 2003/04 season saw Arsenal lose 3-2 on aggregate at this stage while Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties in last season’s semi-final and won 1-0 on aggregate in the semi finals of the 2004/05 season. They also met twice in the group stage of the 2005/06 season, drawing 0-0 on each occasion.

Arsenal may have turned around their form in the nick of time to face a Liverpool side full of confidence. The Gunners came from 2-0 down to beat struggling Bolton Wanderers 3-2 with 10-men on the weekend, a result which ended a run of five matches without victory. Liverpool had a psychological boost of their own by beating Merseyside rivals Everton 1-0, thanks to a goal from in-form Fernando Torres.
