A weakened Australia were beaten at home in a World Cup qualifier for the first time in 27 years by bottom of the group China.

Australia suffered a shock home defeat but had already secured their place in the next phase of qualifying before the match against China kicked off. Mots of Australia’s European-based players were left out by coach Pim Verbeek and some of the country’s younger players were given the opportunity to stake their claim for selection when the next round of qualifiers begins in September.

Shanghai Shenhua defender Sun picked up a headed clearance from defender Ruben Zadkovich and smashed in a volley into the top corner from 25 yards.
