Middlesbrough defender Emmanuel Pogatez felled striker Ivica Olic in the box and new Tottenham Hotspur signing Modric converted the resulting penalty.
A Dario Srna free kick causes panic in the Austrian defence 10 minutes after Modric opened the scoring.
