Germany joined Croatia in the quarter finals after a narrow victory against co-hosts Austria, condemning them to the bottom of the group.

Germany, unsurprisngly got the victory they needed against Austria to progress to the last eight but they were far from convincing. Both coaches Joachim Low and Josef Hickersberg were sent to the stands shortly before half time for arguing with the fourth official and Germany captain struck the winner soon after the break.
