Austria clash against Croatia in the first Group B tie and the co-hosts will be looking to use home advantage to cause an upset against a much stronger and highly rated Croatian team.

The Austrians, who many have written off as outsiders in a strong Group B consisting of Germany, Poland and Croatia, have been given no chance of qualifying for the knockout phase, but coach Josef Hickersberger has claimed his side will turn a few heads this tournament. Ranked at numer 101, and with a dismal year so far with two losses and a draw- all at home - they will need to come together in a big way in order to fulfill their coach’s prediction.

Croatia are looking strong going into Euro 2008. Despite losing to the Netherlands and drawing against Scotland earlier this year, they won their last game going into the tournament and are rated 13th on FIFA’s world rankings, second only to Germany in Group B. However, Poland finished top of their group in the qualifying round (matching Croatia’s efforts) and will be looking to upset the Croatians, whose last good result on the world stage was a dramatic third place at the 1998 World Cup.

In Austria’s 80 games in previous Euro competitions, they have managed to win only 33, while the Croatians have only lost eight of their 47 appearances at the tournament. Expect this game to be a close fought battle, with both teams desperate to start their campaigns with a win, although Croatia looks to have the psychological edge.

Despite home advantage, there are not many pundits singing the praises of co-hosts Austria and they could well get off to a losing start against Croatia. Slaven Bilic’s side lost just once in qualifying for the tournament and famously beat England both home and away enroute to the finals. He will be without the injured Eduardo and there are doubts over where the goals are going to come from but there is an abundance of attacking elsewhere in the likes of new Spurs signing Luka Modric and Portsmouth’s Niko Kranjcar. A narrow victory for Croatia will still give them three vital points as they kick off their Euro 2008 campaign.
