Two of the most unlikely contenders in Barnsley and Cardiff City compete in the second FA Cup semi final on Sunday afternoon.

Before the season began, nobody would have given Barnsley much chance of progressing to this stage of the FA Cup but Simon Davey’s unfashionable Championship side have reached the semi-finals on merit. The Tykes went to Anfield in the fifth round and knocked out Liverpool, coming from 1-0 down to win it in the last minute through Brian Howard. Davey’s team then hosted Chelsea in the quarter final and for the second time were given little chance against the current Cup holders. However, Kayode Odejayi scored his first goal in almost 30 matches to dump the Blues out of the Cup and set up a visit to Wembley.

Cardiff City are another side who fans and experts alike would have not expected to reach the last four of the world’s oldest Cup competition. The mid-table Championship side have been outstanding in the last two rounds of the Cup, winning 2-0 in Middlesbrough and knocking out Wolves the round before, thanks to a wonderful strike from veteran Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

When the pair met at Oakwell earlier in the season, the match ended as a 1-1 draw. Hasselbaink gave Cardiff the lead after 73 minutes but Cup hero Howard equalised with six minutes left. Barnsley travel to Cardiff for the final match of the season and it could be a match which they need to win to avoid relegation, or indeed a match the Bluebirds need to win to reach the play-offs.

This could be one of the most open FA Cup semi finals in recent years with both Barnsley and Cardiff City playing for the unlikely prize of an FA Cup final appearance. Despite Barnsley beating both Liverpool and Chelsea en-route to the semis, it is Cardiff City who start the match as the bookies favourites. City are still in with a chance of a play-off place, while Barnsley are on the brink of relegation after just two seasons in the second tier.
