A relegation six-pointer at St Andrews sees Birmingham City with 26 points take on Newcastle United who are slightly better off with 28.

Monday night sees one of the first relegation “six pointers” of the season when Birmingham City face a Newcastle United side in dire straits. Birmingham went on a four match unbeaten run which yielded draws against Derby, West Ham and Arsenal and then a 4-1 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur, only for it to end abruptly on Wednesday night with a 4-2 defeat at Portsmouth. The Blues fell 2-0 behind after nine minutes but equalised before half-time, only to concede a further two goals in the second half.

Things are going from bad to worse for Newcastle United. The Magpies have not won in eight Premiership matches following Kevin Keegan’s return and they have lost their last four. A 3-0 defeat at Liverpool last weekend was preceded by a last minute defeat against Blackburn, a 5-1 mauling by Manchester United and 4-1 capitulation at Aston Villa. Newcastle just don’t appear up for the fight as they slip closer to the relegation zone. The strikers are ineffective and their back four are one of the most generous in the top flight.

The last three Premiership meetings at St Andrews between the pair has ended all square while the Blues recorded a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup last season before hammering the Magpies 5-1 at St James’ Park in the replay. The pair ground out a goalless draw in the 2005/06 season, a 2-2 draw in the 2004/05 season and 1-1 in the 2003/04 season. Newcastle last won at St Andrews in the 2002/03 campaign when Nobby Solano and Shola Ameobi recorded a 2-0 victory.

It is difficult to see where Newcastle’s next win is going to come from if their last few performances is anything to go by. The side is truly woeful with very little to offer up front and kamikaze defending which just invites their opponents to score as many goals as they fancy. Birmingham, despite their lowly position, have plenty of goal power in the likes of James McFadden and Mikael Forrsell but manager Alex McLeish may be wary that this is a match his side cannot afford to lose. The last four league and cup matches between the pair have ended all square at St Andrews and both sides may have to settle for a point.
