Celtic square off against Aberdeen in a Scottish FA Cup quarter final replay, following a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie earlier this month.

Celtic remain three points behind leaders Rangers after their Scottish Premier clash against Motherwell was called off on the weekend due to a waterlogged pitch. With the Gers playing in the CIS Insurance Cup final, Celtic missed the chance to go level on points at the top of the league, even if they would have played two matches more than Walter Smith’s side. Celtic’s last match was a goalless draw against Dundee United, a match which frustrated manager Gordon Strachan, after admitting his side lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.

Aberdeen occupy eighth place in the Scottish Premier but still harbour hopes of European qualification next season. Jimmy Calderwood’s side recorded a routine victory against struggling Gretna on the weekend with Christopher Maguire, a Lee Miller penalty and Barry Nicholson earning a much needed three points. It was their first SPL win since beating Inverness on 2 January and ended a run of six defeats in their last seven matches.

The first meeting between these sides ended in a 1-1 draw after Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink equalised in the last minute to force a replay. Aberdeen’s Jeffrey de Visscher looked to have won it for the Dons after breaking the deadlock with 12 minutes remaining but Dutch hitman Hesselink swept in from six yards with seconds left on the clock. Celtic have won all three Scottish Premier meetings between the two this season - winning 3-0 at Parkhead in November and recording 3-1 and 5-1 victories at Pittodrie in August and February respectively.

Rangers have already secured one piece of silverware this season and Celtic will not want to let the chance of winning the Scottish FA Cup slip from their grasp.
