The second match in “Grand Slam Sunday” pits third placed Chelsea against second placed Arsenal, but Avram Grant’s side will be favourites to overtake the misfiring Gunners after 90 minutes.

Chelsea lost ground on Premiership leaders Manchester United when they wereheld to a 4-4 draw at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, but could potentially cut the gap at the top of the table to just two points if they beat Arsenal and United lose to Liverpool. The Blues looked to have beaten Spurs midweek when Joe Cole put them 4-3 up after 80 minutes but Robbie Keane netted a dramatic equaliser two minutes from the end. Prior to the draw, Chelsea had won their last three Premiership matches, beating Sunderland, Derby and West Ham.

Arsenal remain second in the table but have not won in their last four matches. Draws against Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa and Birmingham City should have arguably all been victories and those eight points would have put them five points clear at the top of the Premiership. The injury to striker Eduardo during the Birmingham match seems to have had a knock-on effect and top goal scorer Emanuel Adebayor has not scored in his last four league matches. With Liverpool and Manchester United still to play, the Gunners could find their title race over in the next few weeks if their form does not improve dramatically.

Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 in December when William Gallas scored against his former employers on the stroke of half-time. Remarkably, Chelsea have won just four out of 15 Premiership meetings at Stamford Bridge between the pair and just once in their last 11. That victory came in the 2005/06 season when Didier Drogba scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory after 73 minutes. Six out of nine meetings have ended all square as Arsene Wenger’s team continue to be a thorn in the side of their West London rivals.

Despite having a relatively poor record at home against the Gunners, Chelsea are still unbeaten at home since the 2004/05 season and are in better recent form than their North London opponents. The Blues have won three of their last four in the Premiership while the Gunners have drawn their last four in the league. Past meetings suggest another stalemate, with six of the last nine ending all square and Arsene Wenger’s team becoming accustomed to sharing the points in recent matches.
