Sheffield born Clinton Woods takes on Antonio Tarver for the IBF and IBO Light Heavyweight titles in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday night.

Clinton Woods is the current IBF Light Heavyweight champion and has been since he defeated Rico Hoye in March 2005. Since beating Hoye by TKO, he has successfully defended his title against Julio Cesar Gonzalez in September 2005, Jason DeLisle in May 2006, Glen Johnson in September 2006 and against Gonzalez for a second time in September last year.

Woods had expressed an interest in setting up a “Battle of Britain” fight against Joe Calzaghe but instead the Welshman is due to fight Bernard Hopkins next week in Las Vegas.

Florida-born Antonio Tarver is instead Woods’ opponent this weekend and is the current IBO Light Heavyweight champion. Tarver has a 30 fight record which reads Won 26 (19 KO), four defeats and no draws. He also had an impressive amateur career and won a bronze medal when representing the USA in the 1996 Olympic Games.

After beating Roy Jones Jnr to win the IBO Light Heavyweight title in October 2005, Tarver then lost it to Bernard Hopkins in June 2006. He beat Elvir Muriqi in June 2007 for the vacant title and then successfully defended it against Danny Santiago last December, winning by TKO in the fourth round.

Movie buffs may recognise Tarver as Mason “The Line” Dixon, the heavyweight champion in the recent film Rocky Balboa, who battle with the ageing Sylvester Stallone character.
