Croatia and Turkey will both be confident of reaching the semi finals when they take part in an unlikely quarter final clash on Friday night.

As unexpected quarterfinalists, Turkey will want to continue their dream run this tournament, but will find it tough going against a determined Croatia side who finished top of Group B with a clean sweep of three wins.

Interestingly, the Croatians’ last result in a major tournament was third place in the 1998 World Cup finals, while Turkey’s last result was also third place, in the 2002 World Cup finals. So both sides have tasted success, but also the harsh reality of knockout defeat; expect this match to be a hotly contested affair.

Croatia could not have asked for a better start to this tournament. After beating co-hosts Switzerland in their opening match, they went on to upset Group B favourites Germany 2-1, then finished with a polished performance against Poland, winning despite resting a host of starting players. Turkey on the other hand, barely qualified for this match and clinched the second spot in Group A ahead of the Czech Republic in one of the most exciting Euro games of all time. The Czechs were heavily favoured to join Portugal in the quarterfinals, but needed a result against the Turks in their final group match. After scoring their second goal in the 62nd minute, most thought the match was over, but 2-0 down with only 15 minutes left, Turkey pulled off an amazing feat.

A Petr Cech fumble allowed Arda Turan to put in Turkey’s first, giving them hope of another goal and the prospect of penalties. Relentless pressure finally gave way to team captain Nihat’s equalizer, which amazingly was followed up with the game winner just two minutes later. They will draw much confidence from this and Croatia will have to be prepared for a fight to the death.

Croatia will be hot favourites to face Germany in the semi final and are strong outsiders to win the tournament outright. Despite lacking a true goal scorer due to Eduardo’s injury, the likes of Ivica Olic and Ivan Klasnic have weighed in with their share during the group stage. Turkey are in the quarter finals on merit, overturning a 2-0 deficit to beat the Czech Republic 3-2 and Nihat looks a dangerous striker. However, Croatia look the stronger side overall and while both sides go into this match confidently, Slaven Billic’s side have the upper hand.
