Both the Czech Republic and Portugal will battle for Group A supremacy when they meet on Wednesday evening.

Portugal will want to continue their good start to Euro 2008 and stamp their authority on Group A when facing other group contenders Czech Republic, while the Czechs will want to improve on their nervous beginning and show the quality that has made them number six in the world.

They put in a shaky performance, particularly in their own half, where their defense was tested severely and found wanting on some occasions. If not for the woodwork, they would have only produced a draw. A bright spot in their defense had to be goalkeeper Petr Cech. The Chelsea shot stopper was in typically good form and produced some vital saves.

The Czech Republic huffed and puffed their way to victory against an average Swizterland side and the three points only went their way due to a late goal. They will have a much tougher match against Portugal, who were impressive in their opening game victory against Turkey. The problem with both sides is there isn’t a genuine goal scorer for either of them. Ronaldo isn’t performing they way he can at club level and Nuno Gomes missed a hatful of chances. Similarly, Euro 2004 top scorer Milan Baros did not appear against Switzerland and you wonder where the goals will come from.
