David Diaz defends his WBC Lightweight title against WBC Super Featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Manny Pacquiao overtook Floyd Mayweather as the number one ranked pound-for-pound boxer in Ring Magazine after Mayweather announced his retirement from the sport. He now takes on David Diaz for his WBC Lightweight belt in Mandalay Bay on 28 June.

Pacquiao beat Juan Manuel Marquez by a split decision in March 2008 to take the WBC Super Featherweight title and the result was his seventh consecutive victory spanning the last three years. In that sequence he beat Mexican boxers Marco Antonio Barrera, Jorge Solis, two victories against Erik Morales, Oscar Larios and Hector Velazquez.

Mexican American boxer Diaz beat Erik Morales to win the WBC Lightweight title in August 2007, a result which saw Morales announce his retirement from boxing. Diaz has not lost in his last nine bouts, winning eight and drawing with Ramazan Palyani in December 2005. Since losing to Kendall Holt in February 2005, Diaz went on to beat Tyrone Wiggins, John Trigg, Juan Polo Perez, Silverio Ortiz, Cristian Favela, Jose Armando Santa Cruz, Morales, Ramon Montano and of course the draw against Palyani.

Pacquiao has won 46 (KO 35), drawn two and lost three times (KO 2) in 51 fights while Diaz has a professional record of 34 wins (17 KO), one draw and one defeat in a 36 bout career.
