Manchester United could overtake Arsenal at the top of the table, albeit briefly, if they win at rock-bottom Derby County on Saturday afternoon.

After a shock FA Cup exit against Portsmouth last weekend, which saw them lose two goalkeepers during the match, Manchester United must return to winning form against Premiership whipping boys Derby County. After a blip in results, which saw them lose against Manchester City and draw at Tottenham Hotspur, United responded by hammering Newcastle United 5-1 and then Fulham 3-0 a fortnight ago.

With the Champions League manager Alex Fergusons’s sole Cup distraction, United have no excuse not to concentrate fully on their remaining Premiership fixtures and they cannot drop points against a side destined for Championship football next season. Ferguson has rotated his squad in recent matches, leaving out the likes of Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez against Fulham in view of their European fixture against Lyon but this fixture is one where anything less than three points will be a tragedy.

Derby have nothing to lose in this fixture and could emulate sides from past seasons such as Wolves and Norwich City who managed to beat Manchester United before being relegated back to the Championship. With just one win and 10 points to their name all season, Paul Jewell’s side are preparing for life in the second tier and are playing for pride, so they do not become the worst ever side in Premiership history.

Manchester United have a habit of losing to lesser teams and have succumbed to these sorts of defeats season after season. They lost to Norwich City in the 2004/05 season and against Wolves the season before but losing against a side arguably worse than either of them is not an option if the Reds wish to retain their Premiership title this season. Derby are not expected to take anything from this match, which makes them all the more dangerous and if United are not fully focused, they could be the source of just a second victory this season for the Rams.
