Doncaster Rovers v Southend United Live

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, one of the teams, be it Doncaster Rovers or Southend United have to come back stronger than their respective previous performance. The hosts, Southend, were at one point the favourites to register a win after Doncaster’s Paul Hefferman was sent off earlier to the showers than normal regulation. The first leg of this League one play off was controlled more by Southend, with some contribution from the jubilant home crowd whose screams and singing were so melodious at the Root Hall.

Most of the first half, if not all of it, was dominated by Southend, though their finishing was far from the target. Southend Boss, Steve Wilson, was rather disturbed by the fact that his team failed to capitalise on their home ground advantage. He still believes that they have a good chance of winning these play-off semi finals, and statistics support his high hopes. Southend have had a good away record, and Steve also says that he will ensure that his team will be the most ready amongst the two to get a positive result.

Looking back at the game, it seemed as though both sides had agreed to give each other a chance to dominate each half of the game. Doncaster came back after the half as the stronger side, but they also failed to capitalise on their chances. This reign came to an end when Doncaster’s Hefferman was sent off after attempting to head but one of his opponents, after a tackle. He will be missing the second leg of the semi final game, where his side will be hosting Southend.

Doncaster boss, Sean O’Driscoll said the first leg game was just two good teams that cancelled each other out. And he has vowed that his team, also as hosts, will come out the better side.

The first leg was a goalless draw meaning it is all to play for in the match on Friday night. Doncaster are firm favourites having beaten the Shrimpers 3-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium back in December, with goals from Adam Lockwood, Paul Green and Gareth Roberts cancelling out an equaliser from United’s Charlie MacDonald. Rovers have won 14 at home this season, drawing four and losing five, while Southend have been a bit hit and miss on their travels, winning 10, losing nine and drawing four. It could be that Steve Tilson’s side have blown their chance and Sean O’Driscoll’s Doncaster will not have a better chance to get to the final.
