UEFA Champion’s League winners Manchester United’s cross-town rivals Manchester City will be eager to prove they are also capable of winning trophies in the upcoming season, but will need to prove more consistent this time around after fizzling out in the second half of the league following a superb start.

Their UEFA Cup Qualifying Round match against obscure Faroese side EB/Streymur will be the perfect opportunity to adjust to a new manager and fine-tune their line-up and formations, but much is at stake if the club lose.

EB/Streymur has an interesting history, having been formed after two football clubs, Eiðis Bóltfelag and Streymur, merged in 1993, and while the club initially played in the lower Faroese leagues, they soon moved up the ranks to play in the Formuladeildin, the Faroe Islands’ top league. As back-to-back national Cup winners and current holders of the crown, they earned themselves a spot in the UEFA Cup qualifiers for the second year running.

Manchester City will feel this match should be a comfortable one, and unless they field much weaker side or fall apart on the pitch, they shouldn’t have too much of a problem advancing to the next phase of the UEFA Cup. The Manchester side is a major team in the English Premiership, one of the leading leagues in the world, producing three out of four Champion’s League semi finalists and both finalists last season and will feel confident of their chances against such a small club.

New manager Mark Hughes will have much to prove to those City fans who were unhappy about the departure of Sven Goran Eriksson, who many thought did a solid job as manager.

Manchester City may be without several key players following Euro 2008 duty, including Vedran Corluka and Gelsen Fernandes but whatever team new manager Mark Hughes puts out should be strong enough to deal with weak opposition. This match may also give fans a first glimpse of record signing Jo, the Brazilian striker who arrived from CSKA Moscow in an £18 million deal. City are still also in negotiations with Barcelona midfield ace Ronaldinho, but they must concentrate on their opposition from the Faroes to avoid an embarrassing upset.
