Everton must overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit as Serie A side Fiorentina look set to reach the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup.

Everton saw their chances of reaching the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup suffer a major setback in Italy when Fiorentina scored twice in the final 20 minutes. The Toffees managed to keep their Serie A opponents at bay for much of the game and goalkeeper Tim Howard was in inspired form until Serbian midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic broke the deadlock on 70 minutes and Riccardo Montolivo added a second with nine minutes to go.

David Moyes’ side did not let the defeat dampen their quest for Champions League football next season and they beat Sunderland 1-0 on Saturday. Andy Johnson’s goal 10 minutes into the second half proved a welcome tonic for the Toffees before the return leg at Goodison Park. Everton have a good home record this season, winning nine and drawing two out of 14 this season and have a good chance of returning to the form which saw them win five consecutive UEFA Cup fixtures before the defeat at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Fiorentina remain in fourth position in Serie A despite a weekend defeat against struggling Siena, possibly with one eye on the UEFA Cup return fixture at Goodison Park. Cesare Prandelli’s side have been solid on the road in Serie A this season, beating Juventus 3-2 in their last away match. They have lost just three fixtures on the road this season and six wins and five draws proves they are capable of grinding out results away from home. Prandelli will be without injured striker Adrian Mutu, but his absence did not deter Fiorentina from recording a first leg victory.

Everton may count themselves lucky to have kept the first leg score down to two as Fiorentina looked capable of running riot after the first goal went inat the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Tim Howard will have to be at his best again on Wednesday night as Everton cannot afford to concede any further goals but will be open to counter attacks as they have to score two goals at Goodison Park. David Moyes’ side have a solid record at home but Fiorentina have proven to be tough opponents on the road this season and this could be where the Toffees come unstuck in the UEFA Cup.
