France became the first high profile casualities of Euro 2008 when Italy reached the quarter finals at their expense.
In a match that both sides had to win to have any chance of reaching the last eight, Italy were the better side throughout and deserved to win. A penalty from Andrea Pirlo midway through the first half settled the nerves and Daniele De Rossi made sure of the victory after 62 minites.

Eric Abidal fouled Luca Toni in the box and received a red card for his troubles. AC Milan midfielder Pirlo kept his nerve and slotted home the resulting penalty.

Roma midfielder De Rossi saw his 30 yard free kick take a deflection off Thierry Henry into the back of the net for Italy’s second.
