With 26 places between them on the FIFA World Rankings list, it may be a case of David vs Goliath when Germany faces up against Serbia this weekend. As the fifth best team in the world currently, Germany boast a powerful and very experienced side that will prove hard to beat.
The Germans are traditionally an example of perfect form and clinical play, and their current squad is no different. Lead by passionate and aggressive Micheal Ballack, their attack is a combination of experience and youth; watch out for Bayern Munich star Sebastian Schweingsteiger, an aggressive midfielder with a deadly finish. Unbeaten this year and with only one loss from their previous ten matches (a 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic), Germany are in terrific form.
In contrast, Serbia have drawn two matches and lost their other this year, with their last victory against Kazakhstan in November last year. Despite their recent poor form, they retain 31st position amongst the world’s top teams, and are thus relatively more difficult competition for the Germans than the rest of the leading European teams.
With seven goals in their last two games, Germany will be formidable opponents for the Serbs, and they will want to take this opportunity to showcase their talents before the start of Euro 2008, and perhaps finalize their formation strategies. Their miserly defense will be difficult to overcome, and look for plenty of goal scoring opportunities for their forwards. A repeat of their last meeting, a 1-0 victory to the Germans, is a likely outcome.

Ironically, Serbia could be more of a test for Germany than either Poland or Austria in their Euro 2008 group. Germany threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 against Belarus earlier in the week but the fact it only took Miroslav Klose 10 minutes to open the scoring will give coach Joachim Low optimism ahead of this match and beyond. Germany beat Serbia 1-0 in 2003 and with possible injuries in the back of all the players minds, a similar result should not be ruled out here.
