Defending Euro champions Greece will want to prove their victory was no freak incident despite losing their opening match, and will hope a dejected Russia side will be the prey they need to earn their first points of the tournament. Russia, fresh from a 4-1 annihilation at the hands of Spain will have some bruised egos amongst their side, but legendary coach Gus Hiddink will accept nothing but the best from the talented youngsters.

Russia’s first game may appear to have been a one-sided affair on paper, but the Russians did not play particularly baldy against Spain. They were simply outdone by a formidable Spanish team in outstanding form. The Russians fought hard throughout the match and troubled the Spanish back line on several occasions, nearly equalizing just seconds after David Villa put away his first of three goals on the night.

Unfortunately, they had little good fortune and found most of their efforts just missing the net or stopped by Spanish keeper Iker Cassilias. They were eventually rewarded with a consolation goal in the 86th minute courtesy of a Roman Pavlyuchenko header. Their game plan was relatively well executed throughout the match and they showed signs of being a very dangerous side, so if they can continue the level of quality of their play, they will be a difficult team to overcome.

Greece, however, will want to forget their first game, a loss to Sweden and hope that nerves and the pressure of being the current title holders does not overwhelm them. They will need to raise their game to be competitive against the Russians.

Russia may have been thrashed by Spain in their opener, but the scoreline did not really reflect the game. Russia had some good chances and had the likes of Carlos Puyol squirming. If Guus Hiddink’s side can take an early lead, we could see a similar dejected performance from Greece which could result in them being elminated from the competition.
