Before the start of this tournament, most soccer fans would have expected France and Italy to be the teams to emerge from the “Group of Death” and advance to the quarter-finals. However, as these two sides head into their matchup in the final game of Group C, they find themselves desperately fighting for a win in order to survive the opening phase and avoid the embarrassment of an early ticket home; anything less than a victory for either side will likely result in failure to progress.

After a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, Italy would have liked to have bounced back with a strong performance against Romania and a message to the world of their intent to win. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as they put in another disappointing display, managing only a draw- and lucky to salvage even a point after Italian-based striker Adrian Mutu pissed a penalty late in the game.

Despite the inclusion of Allesandro Del Piero in the starting line giving the Azzurri an extra dimension up front, their only real bright spark was man of the match Andrea Pirlo. The AC Milan midfielder was given the task of supplying high balls to danger man Luca Toni and was responsible for most of their attacking opportunities. They will need better commitment and more passion in their playing to stand a chance of winning.

France did not play terribly against the Netherlands, but were outdone by a far superior team. They did well to create several goal scoring opportunities, and the return of Tierry Henry made them a serious threat in attack. They failed to capitalize on their chances, though and will need to do better if they want to be the Italians.
