Manchester United begin their pre season tour in South Africa where they take on the Kaizer Chiefs in the Vodacom Challenge Cup.

South African club football giants Kaizer Chiefs will come up against European champions Manchester United in the first match of the Vodacom Challenge Cup. The first match of the mini-tournament, between the above teams and Orlando Pirates, is a replay of the 2006 final, in which Chiefs surprisingly triumphed via a penalty shoot-out.

The Soweto based club, Kaizer Chiefs, is one South Africa’s most popular clubs and together with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns has dominated the PSL - the country’s Premier Soccer League - since its inception. The Amakhosi have not had the greatest of seasons lately, though, and last won the league in 2005, finishing a lowly ninth in the 2006-2007 season.

In fact, the highlight of the last few years for the club has actually been their win against heavy favourites Manchester United when they visited last. The Chiefs have several promising players, and consist of a mix of young talent, such as striker Kaizer Motaung Jr- incidentally the club owner’s son, and experienced veterans, such as former Charlton finisher and all-time Bafana-Bafana leading scorer Shaun Bartlett. If they can perform at their best, they may be able to give United a run for their money.

Manchester United, in contrast, have had a phenomenal run in the past couple of seasons, with back-to-back Premiership victories and the UEFA Champion’s League title this year. Although they may be without the star power of Christiano Ronaldo and Patrice Evra, who are said to be resting after an exhausting Euro 2008 campaign, manager Alex Ferguson was promised to bring his top English players so look out for the likes of Rooney, Scholes and Ferdinand to show their quality on the pitch.
