Monday’s match between Leeds United and Carlisle United has all the makings of a real cracker. Striker Anthony Elding has already said that he is desperate for revenge after his previous heart break in a play off against the Cumbrians.

Elding was a member of the Stevenage side that lost to Carlisle in the 2005 play offs, a match that lost them the chance of promotion to the Football League. He said that while Carlisle have done well ever since their promotion that season, some kind of revenge would be great. Andrew Hughes is also relishing the prospect of beating Carlisle in the play off and it all depends on how the team performs at Elland Road.

Carlisle on the other hand are disappointed that they didn’t go on this season to get automatic promotion and are in the play offs at all. The team was six points clear at the top of the league just a few weeks ago, but their form slumped as the season drew to a close and now, while they still have a chance at promotion via the play offs, would have been happier with automatic promotion to the Championship.

However, the team is lucky that they still have a chance to prove themselves and they will be certain to give Leeds a run for their money over two legs in the semi final.

Leeds are favourites to win the first leg and beat Carlisle 3-2 at Elland Road back in April, a result which Cumbrians manager John Ward would be happy with on Monday night, seeing as his side beat Leeds 3-1 at Brunton Park in November. Carlisle are in poor form, winning just one of their last six matches which saw them consigned to the play-offs while Leeds won seven of their last nine games to comfortably seal a place in the top six despite a 15 points penalty at the start of the season. Leeds have won 15 out of 23 at Elland Road this season and should take a first leg advantage on Monday.
