Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick for Liverpool who came from behind to beat Middlesbrough 3-2 at Anfield.

Liverpool looked like they would suffer a European hangover when they fell behind after eight minutes but Fernando Torres rescued the Reds with a superb hat-trick, ensuring Rafa Benitez’s side collected all three points.

Turkish striker Tuncay stunned the Anfield crowd with an early header to break the deadlock.

1 - 1 Fernando Torres (27 minutes)

Torres equalised when he rounded goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and struck into an ungarded net from close range.

2 - 1 Fernando Torres (29 minutes)

Torres added his second just two minutes later when he rifled in from 20 yards to put Liverpool in front.

3 - 1 Fernando Torres (61 minutes)

The £30 million summer signing completed his hat trick when he capitalised on a defensive mix up and lofted the ball into an empty net from the edge of the box.

3 - 2 Stewart Downing (83 minutes)

The England winger pulled one back for Boro when he poked in from six yards following a good run down the left hand side.
