Seven-times FA Cup winners Liverpool will be confident of reaching the last eight when they face Championship outfit Barnsley at Anfield.

Liverpool may welcome their FA Cup tie as a distraction from an inconsistent spell in the Premiership which has seen them win just one of their last seven matches, a 3-0 victory against Sunderland. Last weekend’s goalless draw at Chelsea will be seen as a decent enough result but the club are now one place below and three points behind arch-rivals Everton, something which will not do in the eyes of Reds supporters.

Such inconsistency could also be Rafa Benitez’s downfall in this fixture. He will surely have one eye on next week’s home fixture against Serie A holders Inter Milan in the Champions League and his rotation policy could mean several key players, indeed match winners, are rested.

The last round saw Liverpool have on paper the easiest fixture, against the lowest ranked side left in the competition, Havant & Waterlooville. A hat-trick from Yossi Benayoun helped the Reds to a 5-2 victory, even if their Conference South opponents twice took the lead.

From play-off contenders earlier in the season, Barnsley have slipped to fourteenth in the table after losing four of their last six matches. Simon Davey’s side crashed 3-0 to Plymouth Argyle in midweek and they may face a goalkeeper crisis for Saturday’s FA Cup match. Former Liverpool keeper Tony Warner, on loan from Fulham, is cup-tied and regular stopper Heinz Muller has just had cruciate ligament surgery.

Despite having bigger things on their mind, namely next Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Inter, Liverpool should have enough to progress to the quarter finals. However, at odds of less than 1.2, they represent no value whatsoever considering League One side Luton Town held them to a 1-1 draw in the third round. Barnsley emerged victorious when the two sides met at Anfield in the Premiership in November 1997. A goal from the much-travelled Ashley Ward settled the match 1-0 in the Tykes’ favour while Jamie Carragher, the only surviving member of the Liverpool squad from that game, was an unused substitute.
