It’s no secret that Liverpool has been struggling to perform at top level this season and this has been confirmed with the Reds never really being in the title race and languishing 11 points behind both Manchester United and Chelsea. Rafa Benitez’s side will have to make do with a second successive fourth-placed finish and the manager will be under immense pressure now the Reds are out of the Champions League.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw against relegation-threatened Birmingham City shows the challenges facing Liverpool and the side will have to address these if they are to pick up maximum points against mid-table Manchester City on Sunday. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, the two catalysts of recent success, were rested for the last two matches in view of Liverpool’s Champions league commitments but may be recalled to the side in order to try and salvage something from an overall disappointing season.

For Manchester City, it is to be hoped that speculation over boss Sven-Goran Eriksson’s future with the club won’t over shadow the teams efforts on the pitch. With just two games to go in the season it seems like a strange time for the coach to be holding private meetings with club owner Thaksin Shinawatra and Eriksson has been keen to postpone such discussions until the season closes.City have been inconsisent this season and threw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at home to relegation contenders Fulham. They may have to endure another defeat this Sunday.

Two deflated sides go head to head at Anfield and both could do with a three-point pick me up. Liverpool were dumped out of the Champions League midweek and a fourth placed Premiership finish is unlikely to please either the club owners or thefans.
