Liverpool could improve their chances of a fourth placed finish if they can win a fourth successive Premiership match against beleaguered Newcastle United.

Liverpool leapfrogged Everton into fourth place after a convincing 4-0 victory against West Ham United on Wednesday night. Star striker Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick and Steven Gerrard also got on the scoresheet as the Reds ran riot at Anfield. The victory was Rafa Benitez’s side’s third Premiership victory in a row as they attempt to secure Champions league football for next season.

The 4-0 victory followed up on Sunday’s convincing 3-1 win at Bolton and a 3-2 victory against Middlesbrough the week before. Torres scored his second ha-trick in three matches and took his tally to 18 goals in 25league appearances this season. Liverpool have beaten Newcastle United at Anfield in each of the last three seasons and have won 11 out of 14 encounters.

The way Newcastle have played recently, another Liverpool win is likely. Kevin Keegan’s side have lost four of their last five matches, including 4-1 and 5-1 hammerings by Aston Villa and Manchester United. There were signs that they would turn it around against Blackburn Rovers last week but a last minute David Bentley goal consigned the Magpies to a third successive Premiership defeat. Keegan’s side will have to find some unseen form if they are to win this weekend as they last beat Liverpool in a league fixture at Anfield on their debut season in the Premiership, when Andy Cole and Robert Lee netted in a 2-0 victory in 1994.
