Manchester United will look to take the performance that destroyed Arsenal on the weekend to France, where they face French champions Lyon.

Manchester United will be confident of progressing to the quarter finals of the Champions League after being drawn against French champions Lyon. United swept through Group F, winning five out of the six matches and drawing the other one. A 1-1 draw at Roma was the only blot on an otherwise perfect copybook but United had already qualified for the last 16 by the time that match was played.

United appear to have turned around a slightly disappointing spell of form after destroying Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round. Alex Ferguson’s side, despite missing key figures such as Ryan Giggs and Ronaldo were breathtaking against the Gunners and played at such a high tempo their opponents could simply not get into the match. The 4-0 scoreline flattered the Reds, who could have won by an even greater margin but Ferguson will be happy knowing his side travels to France in high spirits.

Manchester United met Lyon during the 2004-05 Champions League. The pair drew 2-2 in France, with two goals in five minutes from Ruud van Nistelrooy rescuing a point after United trailed 2-0 at the break. Van Nistelrooy was on target again in the return leg at Old Trafford and a rare goal for Gary Neville have the Reds a 2-1 win.

French champions Lyon are again top of Ligue One, although by just a point to second placed Bordeaux. Their fantastic home record in Europe was shattered by Rangers who pulled off a remarkable 3-0 victory at the Stade Gerland but Alain Perrin’s side should not be underestimated. They defeated Rangers at Ibrox by the same scoreline and held Barcelona to a 2-2 draw. Perrin may have had one eye on this fixture over the weekend as his side crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Le Mans.

If United played every week the way they did against Arsenal in the FA Cup on the weekend, it would not be a question of whether they could win the Premiership or even the Champions League, it would be by what margin.
