Manchester City missed the chance to go level on points with Champions League chasers Liverpool and Aston Villa when they lost at home to Everton on Monday night. The result saw Everton edge ahead of the chasing pack and claim fourth spot for themselves, at least for the time being. The defeat was only City’s second at the City of Manchester Stadium all season but Sven Goran Eriksson’s side were poor. They failed to register a single shot on target until the last five minutes of the match and will be without inspirational winger Martin Petrov, who was sent off three minutes into stoppage time for a petulant kick out at Leon Osman.

Wigan Athletic are slowly edging away from the relegation zone but are only four points clear of the bottom three. Steve Bruce’s side earned a welcome victory against bottom club Derby County, a result which left former Latics boss Paul Jewel, now in charge at Pride Park, fuming. Wigan have won two of their last three in the Premiership, also beating West Ham prior to a 2-0 defeat at Sunderland. Away from home is where the Latics struggle and they have lost 10 out of 14 on the road this season, winning just once and drawing three.

Despite a poor away record, Wigan have recorded 1-0 victories at Manchester City in successive seasons. Caleb Folan struck the winner early on last term and Lee McCulloch netted the winner 10 minutes into the second half in the 2005/06 campaign.
