Manchester City stunned arch-rivals United with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on an afternoon where the city, and indeed the world remembered the tragic Munich air disaster of 50 years ago.

United wore shirts in the style of those worn in 1958 - sponsorless plain red and with numbers one to eleven, no squad numbers or surnames. Even this sense of occasion could not inspire Alex Ferguson’s men to victory and the defeat leaves them two points behind leaders Arsenal and having played one match more.

0 - 1 Darius Vassell (24 minutes)

Dreadful defending by United allowed Darius Vassell to slam in a loose ball from close range.

0 - 2 Benjani Mwaruwari (45 minutes)

Debut striker Benjani doubled City’s lead on the stroke of half-time when his flick header guided a cross from Martin Petrov beyond the reach of Edwin Van der Sar

1 - 2 Michael Carrick (90 minutes)

Carrick pulled one back for the Reds one minute into stoppage time but United had run out of time to snatch a dramatic equaliser and City earned their first league win at Old Trafford since 1974.
