Manchester United cannot afford any slip ups against West Ham United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon if they want to retain their Premiership title.

Currently at the top of the league, Manchester United will be hoping to deal a solid blow to West Ham United and indeed title rivals Chelsea this weekend. However, while they are red-hot favourites to win at Old Trafford, there are some serious injuries that Sir Alex Ferguson will be worrying about this week. Star players Wayne Rooney and Nemandja Vidic are both doubtful to play in the match.

When asked whether they would feature, Ferguson said “I can’t be certain”. Ferguson has also had to dismiss critics who claim that United are entering a slump and are going to lose the Premiership title to arch rivals Chelsea. They have a point, as United have won just one of their last four Premiership matches and Saturday’s crunch fixture against the Hammers will be a chance to prove the doubters wrong.

West Ham, on the other hand, will be looking to pick up at least a draw on Saturday if they are to climb the league table and went one better last season with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford. However, with Ljunberg suffering a cracked rib during last Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle, it is likely that they are going to have their work cut out for them.

Alan Curbishley’s side are currently seven points behind Manchester City, who stand above them in ninth place in the league table. A victory at Old Trafford, however unlikely, would give a much needed morale boost to the team if they are to close that gap and end the season on a high. The recent victory against albeit rock-bottom Derby shows the expensively-assembled Hammers can perform when in the mood.

Ironically, Carlos Tevez netted the winner for West Ham at Old Trafford last season, but the Premiership was already won by then and this match has a completely different level of significance. United simply cannot afford to drop any points in their final two matches after losing to Chelsea last weekend and the midweek victory against Barcelona should have them raring to go on Saturday. United have lost two of their last four Premiership meetings against the Hammers at Old Trafford but have won 10 out of 12 overall and there are no excuses not to collect maximum points against Alan Curbishley’s underachieving side..
