Marseille and Liverpool once again meet in this stage of the Champions League after they were drawn in the same group last season. Last season at Anfield, Mathieu Valbuena’s strike stunned Liverpool as the French side left with a 1-0 victory, only for Liverpool to gain revenge and win 4-0 at the Stade Velodrome.

In team news for Liverpool, manager Rafa Benitez is likely to welcome back Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres back into the squad.

Steven Gerrard has seemingly recovered from his groin operation after playing 22 minutes in Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Manchester United on Saturday but Torres was an unused substitute, after suffering a hamstring injury. Javier Mascherano is also expected to have shaken off his knee injury, but Fabio Aurelio is ruled out with a calf problem.

Both Marseille and Liverpool had difficult weekend fixtures - Marseille against Bordeaux and Liverpool’s magnificent victory over Manchester United but it’s early and the season and fatigue should not be a problem.
