Sheffield United were unlucky not to beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup but will face a much tougher test when they visit the Riverside Stadium.

Kevin Blackwell tests himself against Premiership opposition again as his Sheffield United side travel to Middlesbrough in their FA Cup replay. The Blades were unfortunate not to beat a dour Boro side when the two ground out a goalless draw at Bramall Lane 10 days ago with James Beattie hitting the woodwork on the stroke of half time from a well-worked free kick.

Neither side are pulling up trees in their respective divisions and reaching the semi final of the FA Cup and indeed, playing at Wembley, could give both sets of fans a taste of glory in what has otherwise been a disappointing season. After being relegated from the Premiership last season, an expensively assembled Sheffield United side find themselves fifteenth in the Championship with Blackwell recently replacing Bryan Robson as manager. Boro are improving and are up to twelfth in the Premiership after just losing one of their last six matches and winning their last two played at home.

When Sheffield United met Middlesbrough in the Premiership last season, they lost 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium. None of the players who scored that day are still with their clubs. Mark Viduka and two from Yakubu sealed victory for Boro while a Phil Jagielka penalty briefly equalised for Neil Warnock’s side. The Blades have not won at Middlesbrough since the 1997/98 season, when they beat Boro 2-1 through Brian Deane and Dane Whitehouse. Boro took the lead through Mikkel Beck.

Sheffield United should have beaten Middlesbrough when the pair met in the FA Cup quarter final 10 days ago but Boro will be better equipped in the replay. They are in good form in the Premiership and have won their last two matches at home, beating Fulham and Wigan. The Blades are inconsistent away from home, winning just four out of 17 on the road this season, losing seven and drawing six. The FA Cup is the only route Gareth Southgate’s side will realistically have into Europe, despite an upturn in league form and will fully expect his side to make use of their home advantage on Wednesday night.
