Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, the current WBA Welterweight champion, takes on Alfonso Gomez in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday night.

After a successful career at Light Welterweight in which he defended his title six times, Miguel Cotto relinquished his title in 2006 and then beat Carlos Quitanga that December to win the vacant WBA Welterweight title. He then went on to defend it against Oktay Urkal in March 2007, Zab Judah in June 2007 and then Shane Mosely in November 2007.

The 27-year-old Cotto had previously represented Puerto Rico at Lightweight and Light Welterweight at various events as an amateur, including the Pan American Games in 1999 and the Summer Olympics in 2000. He has a professional record of 31 wins (25 KO) and no draws or losses.

Alfonso Gomez competed on reality TV show The Contender, where he was ranked third out of 16 boxers. Since losing to Peter Manfredo Jnr on the show, Gomez has been undefeated in seven subsequent fights. He beat Jesse Brinkley, also of Contender fame in May 2005, Luciano Perez in October 2005 and then fought Jesse Feliciano to a draw in May 2006. He then went on to beat Carson Jones, Martin Concepcion as part of the Contender Challenge: UK vs USA and then Arturo Gatti and Ben Tackie.
