Celtic missed their chance to close the gap on Rangers midweek and must win at Motherwell to go level on points, despite playing two fixtures more.

Celtic failed to close the gap on Scottish Premier leaders Rangers on Wednesday night when they could only grind out a goalless draw against Dundee United. The point gained saw them go three points behind the Gers but having played one game more. Now Gordon Strachan’s side visit fourth placed Motherwell where a win would see them accumulate 68 points, the same as their Ibrox rivals, but giving Walter Smiths’s team two games in hand. Celtic are unbeaten in 11 SPL matches but the midweek draw saw a run of nine consecutive victories come to and end.

Motherwell are pressing third-placed Dundee United hard for a place in Europe next season and find themselves level on points with the Tangerines and two points ahead of fifth placed Hibernian, despite losing 2-0 against them lon Wednesday night. Mark McGhee’s side have not won in their last four matches since beating Inverness 3-1 in February. Motherwell have a decent home record, winning seven out of 13, drawing twice and losing the other four.

Celtic have beaten Motherwell once this season, recording a 3-0 victory at Parkhead in October which saw former Well striker Scott McDonald record a hat-trick. Last season saw Motherwell striker Darren Lee Smith net a dramatic equaliser to earn his side a 1-1 draw after Celtic had taken a first half lead through Derek Riordan. The 2005/06 season saw an incredible 4-4 draw at Fir Park, where Celtic went 3-1 ahead, before falling 4-3 behind and Craig Beattie netting an injury time equaliser. Motherwell last beat Celtic at home in the 2004/05 season, when Scott McDonald netted twice in the final two minutes to cancel out an opener by Chris Sutton.
