World Cup runners-up France will want to improve on a lacklustre performance in their opening match, a goalless draw against a much weaker Romanian side. However, they will find no easy ride in their second match, a clash of the titans against a young and energetic Dutch side. The Netherlands started their campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over World champions Italy and will be confident heading into this match.

The French team was found to be disappointing in their first game, and although their defense did not concede there was no real spark in their offense and they enjoyed few quality goal-scoring opportunities. Forwards Anelka and Bezema failed to penetrate the Romanian defense, and Bezema missed some vital scoring chances. They will bolstered, however, by the news of the return of two star players Patrick Viera and Thierry Henry.

Both sustained thigh muscle injuries in training, although Henry’s injury is suspected to be less serious and the Barcelona star is likely to start on Friday. The French will look to Henry for inspiration and a little magic up front, and as France’s all-time leading goal scorer with 44 goals to his name, the former Arsenal striker may well prove to be the missing element France needs to succeed.

The Netherlands will be supremely confident going into their matchup with France, having systematically destroyed a star-studded Italian side with clever play and penetrating runs up front. Two goals for youngster Sneijder, one of them a brilliant display of teamwork and skill, will make him a man to watch in the next match, as will Ruud van Nistelrooy, who proved his deadly poaching quality. This match is sure to be a closely fought battle, but the Dutch might have a psychological edge.
