The Netherlands are known as perennial underachievers and will want to go into next month’s Euro 2008 with confidence by beating Wales this weekend. The Euro 2004 semi-finalists have been blamed for decades for having all the talent in the world but rarely turning that into success in major tournaments. The Welsh, on the other hand, have no big competitions coming up and will be looking to upset the favourites.

Unbeaten in three matches this year, including a close 4-3 victory against Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria, the Netherlands look to be in great form as is expected by a team of their stature. Many claim they should be considerably higher than the 10th position they currently hold of FIFA World Rankings- a claim justified by the presence of masters of the game such as Robben, Van Persie, Van Nistelrooy, Babel, Sneijder and Van der Vaart.

The team has a healthy mix of youth and experience, and the midfield comprises a deadly attacking force to support capable strikers. The Dutch team last tasted Cup glory in 1988 and will be eager to continue their current form in the hopes of regaining the Euro crown.

Wales are also unbeaten this year so far, with victories against Norway and Luxemborg, but may struggle for depth and consistency against a much more aggressive Dutch side. There are few international stars to speak of in the Welsh setup and they have never beaten the Dutch. The last meeting between these two teams was an embarrassing 7-1 drubbing of Wales by the Netherlands in Eindhoven in 1996, and while the score may not be as dramatic this time around, it is reasonably safe to assume a similar outcome will prevail.

The Netherlands are underdogs in their Euro 2008 group and will face a stern test against an improving Wales side on Sunday afternoon.
