Manchester United heaped more misery on Kevin Keegan’s beleagured Newcastle United by dishing out a 5-1 thrashing at St James’ Park.

Manchester United were everything Newcastle United were not on Saturday night - passionate, skillful and equally adept in both attack and defence. The Magpies are in real danger of relegation this season if they collapse in such spectacular style as they did when Cristiano Ronaldo regained his goalscoring touch.

0 - 1 Wayne Rooney (25 minutes)

Rooney smashed in unmarked from close range when he met perfectly a pinpoint cross from Ronaldo.

0 - 2 Cristiano Ronaldo (45 minutes)

The improving Nani  played Ronaldo in who slid the ball underneath the onrushing Steve Harper from 12 yards.

0 - 3 Cristiano Ronaldo (56 minutes)

Dreadful defending allowed Ronaldo to stride into the box unmarked, round the keeper and tuck in for his second of the match.

1 - 3 Abdoulaye Faye (78 minutes)

Magpies centre back Faye gave his side a glimmer of hope when he hammered in a corner from close range.

1 - 4 Wayne Rooney (80 minutes)

Arguably the best goal of the night, Rooney curled in superbly into the far corner from the edge of the box, giving keeper Harper no chance.

1 - 5 Louis Saha (90 minutes)

Rooney was the unselfish provider for substitute Saha to get in on the act when he squared for the Frenchman to score against his former club from inside the box.
