Newcastle United are looking nervously over their shoulders at the bottom three after failing to win a single match since Kevin Keegan returned to the club as manager. Last weekend’s 5-1 home defeat against Manchester United showed what a shambled the Magpies are in all areas of the pitch and these problems need to be addressed before it is confirmed the club will be competing in the second tier next term. Keegan’s side are just six points above the relegation zone but have scored just three goals since he returned and conceded a colossal 13 in five Premiership matches.

Blackburn Rovers are one of a clutch of clubs still optimistic of a fourth place finish although an UEFA Cup spot is a more realistic target. Mark Hughes’ side won their first match in four attempts when they defeated Bolton Wanderers 4-1 last weekend and will see the struggling Magpies as ripe for plundering another three points. Rovers have been decent on the road this season, winning five, drawing five and losing three of 13 played in total.

Blackburn have won on their last two visits to St James’ Park and three of the last four. Given the state of the Magpies at present, could well make it a hat-trick. Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts scored one goal apiece in last season’s 2-0 win and Morten Gamst Pedsersen struck the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory in the 2005/06 season. Newcastle last beat Rovers at home in 2004 when they registered a 3-0 victory.

Newcastle United are in real danger of being dragged into a relegation battle and despite on paper having a decent starting eleven, they are struggling in every department on the field.
