The second match of the Vodacom Challenge Cup sees the Soweto-based South African side Orlando Pirates take on English Premiership and Champion’s League winners Manchester United.

The teams last met in 2006, when Manchester United outclassed the local side and ended as comfortable winners, but went on to lose the Cup on penalties in the final against Pirates’ Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Orlando Pirates, who play in the ABSA Preimer League, is South Africa’s oldest club, founded in 1937, and has a rich tradition of quality and pride in the country’s soccer annals. The Buccaneers have won several league title over the years and are the club of some of South Africa’s greatest players- including Kaizer Motaung and Jomo Somo, both of whom now own successful teams in the Premier League - Kazier Chiefs and Jomo Cosmos respectively.

They are the only Southern Hemisphere club to have won the African Champion’s League and are also the only local club to have attained Superbrands status. As previous winners of the Vodacom Challenge, in 1999 and 2005, Pirates will want a winning performance against United to stand them in good stead to make the final.

Manchester United will be without the talents of their Euro 2008 stars for the Vodacom Challenge, which means that fans will not see the likes Christiano Ronaldo, Nani, Patrice Evra or goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar gracing the pitch. However, the Red Devils will still have plenty of firepower in Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and many others to ensure Pirates will have to play their best to stand a chance against arguably the best team in the world at the moment.
