Former Light Middleweight champion Oscar De La Hoya takes on ex-Contender Steve Forbes in preparation for his September bout against Floyd Mayweather.

Oscar De La Hoya is to face Floyd Mayweather in a highly anticipated rematch in September and try to reclaim the WBC Light Middleweight title he lost to him last May.

This arguably a warm-up bout for the Las Vegas showdown in four months time and with just five bouts in as many years, of which he lost three, it is arguable the 35-year-old could do with the practice.

De La Hoya has lost just five out of 38 matches in a professional career which has spanned 16 years but the defeat to Mayweather a year ago, a loss to Bernard Hopkins in 2004 and two defeats against Shane Mosley in 2003 and 2000, without many victories in between, suggest the Los Angeles-born fighter hasn’t many bouts left in him.

Opponent Steve Forbes featured in the second series of The Contender and won his first three bouts of the series, defeating Freddy Curiel, Nick Acevedo, and Cornelius Bundrage. However, he lost to Grady Brewer in the final match. Following his stint on the reality show, Forbes lost a decision to Demetrius Hopkins, nephew of former Light Heavyweight champion Bernard in March 2007 but went on to beat Francisco Bojado by split decision in October.

Forbes has a professional career which reads 33 wins (nine KO), five defeats and no draws from 38 fights.
