Portugal outlined their intentions for the tournament with a comfortable 2-0 victory against a lacklustre Turkey side.
Portugal were always in control of the match and saw a goal from Pepe disallowed in the first half. The Real Madrid defender managed to get his name on the scoresheet on the hour and Raul Meireles made sure of the win with a second in stoppage time. Aside from an impressive display from Colin Kazim-Richards, Fatih Terim’s side had very little to be positive about.
1- 0 Pepe (61 minutes)
Real Madrid centre back Pepe played a great one-two with striker Nuno Gomes to slip the ball home from 12 yards while under pressure from the Turkish defence.
2- 0 Raul Meireles (90 minutes)
Porto midfielder Meireles, a second half substitute, sealed victory three minutes into stoppage time when he finished a flowing Portugal move which had their opponents all at sea.
Pepe sees a goal disallowed for offside after 16 minutes.
Cristiano Ronaldo strikes the post from a first half set piece.
A Nuno Gomes strike clatters back off the post five minutes into the second half.
Nuno Gomes again hits the woodwork, this time a header comes back off the crossbar shortly after Pepe broke the deadlock.
