The second Group A fixture of Saturday night between Portugal and Turkey promises to be a hot match-up between two sides eager to impress early on in Euro 2008. Portugal may outrank Turkey on FIFA’s list, but with their experience and determination, will prove tough opponents.

The young Portuguese team, ranked 10th in the world going into this tournament are a young and talented side with lots of potential. Finalists in the last tournament, they will be looking to go one better this time around and with players like Cristiano Ronaldo, this might be their year.

The Manchester United winger has been in incredible form all season and will be hungry for success on the international stage. Turkey, ranked 25th in the world, made heads turn when they made the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup in Korea, but have not had any consistent performances since then. Their squad is an aging one and while the experience will help them withstand the efforts of the Portuguese, they may struggle to compete with their pace and energy.

The two teams have met six times previously, with Turkey having won on only one occasion, in 1955. Their previous two meetings, in 1996 and 2000, were both in Euro competition and Portugal emerged victorious on both occasions. Most pundits will favour the Portuguese to prevail in this match-up, but Turkey has shown they can compete with the best before.

Portugal will be under pressure from the off to defeat a Turkey side they have already beaten twice before at the European championships. Also under pressure will be Ronaldo, who has not really done it on the world stage yet and will be expected to live up to his “world’s best player” billing. However, Portugal are a side that could go all the way this year and have plenty of goals in the team. Turkey could find themselves bottom of the group if they are not careful, with coach Fatih Terim opting for discipline rather than flair. They are a difficult side to break down and will probably opt to frustrate the Portuguese, but such a negative attitude could backfire on them against a side blessed with attacking flair.
