Rangers will be looking to take control of the Scottish Premiership this weekend as they face fourth placed Dundee United. The Tangerines will stand to maintain their place in the league with a win, as Hibernian attempt to sneak past them.

Rangers will be boosted by their recent 1-0 win over third placed Motherwell. The Gers have been consistent all season but will be determined to take the Championship from current leaders and rivals Celtic. Walter Smith’s side will be eager to continue their winning form after only taking eight points from the last six games.

Dundee United have also struggled recently, with only six points from as many games. With only two defeats in their opening 10 games of the campaign, United will look to regain the form that saw them beat Ranger 2-1 back in October.

Their 3-3 draw in April may be an indication of what to expect in a game of two teams not in their best form, although Rangers may have the edge with the incentive of a Championship trophy to play for.

The match is vital for Rangers if they are to have any chance of taking this year’s title. A lot will also depend on the match being played this week between Celtic and Hibernian as a loss for Celtic in that match would provide Rangers with the perfect opportunity to close the gap, currently at four points but with Smith’s side having two games in hand.

Since losing at Dundee United back in October, Rangers have remained undefeated against Craig Levein’s side in three subsequent league and cup matches, including a penalty shoot out victory in the League Cup final. Rangers’ 1-0 victory against Motherwell in midweek saw them close the gap at the top of the Scottish Premier to four points, with them having two games in hand over leaders Celtic. This is another massive game for the battle-weary Gers and they simply have to beat the Tangerines to keep their hopes of retaining the Scottish Premier alive.
