Rangers first obstacle for qualifying for the group stages of the Champions league comes in the form of Lithuanian opponents FBK Kaunas.

Socttish Premier League runners-up Rangers will face Lithuanian side FBK Kaunas as each side attempts to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The 1st leg of this 2nd round qualifying tie will be an intriguing affair as the little known Lithuanian club aims to upset a stronger, more experienced Scottish opponent.

The two leg series kicks-off at Ibrox on Wednesday 30 July, with the second leg on 5 August. FBK Kaunas is owned in part by banker Vladimir Romanov, who also owns the majority of Scottish club Hearts, and thus has been linked with the club on numerous occasions.

Several players have been transferred to play in the Scottish league in this manner. The Lithuanian squad is coached by former FC Porto / Portugal U21 coach Jose Couceiro. In discussing the merits of his squad Couciero noted, “Kaunas have a lot of strong individual players, but the team is poorly prepared both in terms of technique and tactics. A lot of improvements are needed in this respect.”

The Lithuanians are dominant in their domestic league, having won four of the five titles on offer, but perhaps lack experience at the top level, although they have played Rangers, Celtic and Liverpool previously in Champion’s League qualifying matches.

Rangers will be confident in their ability to progress through the qualification round and reach the group stages of the Champions League, having performed well in last year’s competition. Of interest is the possibility of new-man, Striker Andrius Velicka, a Lithuanian International who came up with FBK Kaunas, seeing his first action for the Rangers in the match.
