Anyone who has been following Rangers this season will be looking for a strong performance against Motherwell this week. After their 0-0 draw against Hibernian on Sunday, it’s no surprise that Rangers are slightly disappointed. With the season rapidly drawing to an end, Rangers are still seven points behind league leaders Celtic and they are finding that they have less and less chances to bridge the gap.

Therefore, one would expect Rangers to be pulling out all the stops in the Motherwell fixture on Wednesday night. Some have been citing fatigue as the reason for the team’s week performance in the match but manager Walter Smith says that fatigue has not been a factor for the busy team, despite the fact that they are competing in both the UEFA and Scottish Cup finals at the moment.

Motherwell were disappointed on Saturday when they fell back from a one goal league to lose two one to Celtic at Fir Park. That game will make the upcoming match against Rangers all the more significant since Rangers have just three games in hand against Celtic to make up the lost ground.

There has also been a fair deal of controversy about Motherwell captain Paul Quinn, who suffered a broken jaw in a nightclub fight last week that will prevent him from making an appearance. Team manager Mark McGhee has said that Quinn has let the team down and that he should have done more and used his common sense to ensure that he would be there to play for the team.

Rangers may have three games in hand over current Scottish Premier leaders Celtic but a seven point gap has opened up following Walter Smith’s side dropping points in recent matches. The Gers are without a win in their last four SPL fixtures, with back-to-back defeats against Celtic sandwiched between a 3-3 draw at Dundee United and goalless draw at Hibs on the weekend. Motherwell are performing admirably this season and occupy third spot in the league. They will not give Rangers an easy game but Smith’s side simply have to win at Ibrox if they have any chance of closing the gap on Glasgow rivals Celtic.
