Despite winning their last three visits to AS Roma, during the group stages of the 2004-05, 2002-03 and 2001-02 Champions League, Real Madrid succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico a fortnight ago. Roma cut Inter Milan’s lead at the top of Serie A to six points after beating struggling Parma 4-0 on Saturday. Alberto Aquilani, a Giulo Falcone own goal, Francesco Totti and Mirko Vucinic sealed an emphatic victory which will give Luciano Spalletti’s side confidence. Roma have performed well in this season’s Champions League and have just lost one match so far, a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United.

Real Madrid will be expected to turn this tie around at the Bernabeu but Roma are not just here to make up the numbers. Real have lost just once in 12 home La Liga matches this season but in recent matches they have shown to be susceptible in defence, as the 2-1 defeat in Rome and their 3-2 victory at Recreativo showed. Leading 2-1 from the first leg, Roma could try and frustrate the home side and progress to the quarter finals with a draw, but an away goal would give Schuster’s side some real problems.
