Romania took their first step to a shock qualification for the quart finals by holding France to a goalless draw in the opening match of Group C.

In what was avery poor game, Romania stuck to their plan to frustrate a lacklustre French side who had few goal scoring opportunities. Both Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema missed the best chances for Raymond Domenech’s side as Romania appeared happy to sit back and defend.

Nicolas Anelka was guilty of heading over the bar from six yards in what was France’s best chance of the match.

Florent Malouda went on a mazy run four minutes after the restart but saw his effort flash wide of the post.
