Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga and are four points clear of second placed Werder Bremen. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side are unbeaten in their last eight league matches but there are signs they are stuttering in the league. Bayern have drawn four of their last eight in the league, dropping points against challengers Hamburg and Werder Bremen and strugglers Duisburg and Hertha Berlin. Schalke 04 are in fifth position and currently nine points behind Bayern. It appears Mirko Slomka’s team are suffering from a European hangover as they lost their league fixtures immediately before and after their last 16, first leg tie against FC Porto, which they won 1-0. The defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg have seen them fall behind in the title race but they have the opportunity to put this right against the leaders. Schalke have a good home record this season, winning six, drawing three and losing two in 11 matches played.

Schalke 04 have an incredible home record against Bayern Munich and are unbeaten in eight Bundesliga encounters. Schalke have recorded five victories and three draws since Bayern won 3-1 at the Veltins-Arena in 1998, including comprehensive 5-1 and 4-1 victories in 2002 and 2000. The last two matches have ended all square, 2-2 in 2006 and 1-1 in 2005.

Bayern Munich have a poor record at Schalke 04 over the last 10 years but have the chance to put it right this weekend. Schalke may concentrate on next week’s Champions League encounter against FC Porto, over whom they have a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg and may not have they minds fully focused on this match.
